People

Camille Migot is a young fellow, whose first vintage was in 2013; he’s traditionally minded, 13th generation winemaker, focused on doing everything by hand, with as little intervention as possible.

Place

Having been ravaged by world wars, it’s a bit miraculous that Lorraine exists as a winemaking region. It sits in the northeast corner of France, bordering Germany, Belgium, and Luxembourg, and parts of Lorraine show a mingling of these cultures, which have engaged one another for centuries. Given its tiny production relative to other French regions, formal wine credentialing classes completely overlook Lorraine, which is a downright shame. Not much wine from Lorraine makes its way to the USA, so we’re fortunate to have come across this.

Migot’s estate is a mere five hectares in size, located in the Côtes de Toul, whose terroir is often compared to that of Chablis and sits between Champagne and Alsace. Most production in Lorraine is focused on passable, inexpensive bottlings, but Migot seeks quality above and beyond everything else. Hence, the manual labor that he puts into everything.

Palate

Dry and minerally, high acid, with tart red berry fruit and gentle florality. Fully sparkling, and fully chuggable.

Technical Notes

100% Gamay, organically grown and hand-harvested. Fermented by native yeasts, aged in stainless steel and neutral oak. Traditional method with lees aging. Lightly filtered.
